DEHYDRATION OR REHYDRATION

It’s on a Saturday, early afternoon, I just left a vending event that I was at to join my team at a seminar about one and a half hours away.  I just arrived and got settled in and about 15 minutes later, I get a call from my son.  He is in a panic!

“Mom, Dad just passed out and I don’t know what to do!”

Well, we were all at the vending event and they were at another booth, my husband was behind the grill cooking most of the day for the event.  It’s in the 80 degrees and it’s hot behind the grill but we didn’t realize he was not drinking hardly any water because it was so busy.  I was not in the same vending tent and was not near to them to notice that morning, he was not drinking water, just working, working, working in the hot heat, and sweating a lot.

He is middle age which means he is not young anymore.  Do you think that he would think sweat means losing water from his body, of course not!

I told my son to get someone who is in charge and call an ambulance no matter what his dad says.  “I will leave right now and head home to be there, stay with your dad!”  I left right away and of course, while driving the hour and a half back and remembering, that I need to be safe driving too, I’m praying and shedding some tears that my husband would be alright!  I do mean, praying a lot too!

I get to where the vending event was being held to find out that no one is there now because it all ended.  No sign of my husband or son so, I called my son.  He said, “Mom, I drove dad home and he is on the couch laying down.  He was dehydrated and the EMTs gave him water and made him drink a few bottles before they would release him.”  Of course, my husband would not go to the hospital, he made them go down the road and buy a few bottles of water for him.  Did you know that this ambulance did not have water on board to just give it to him?  Nope, it did not.

I got home to find my husband on the couch, looking a little pale, to be expected, he was drinking water and my son was sitting in a chair with him.  My son was scared and frightened and as soon as he saw me, he got up and gave me a hug, you know, one of those hugs that say, I’m so glad you are here now!

Well, after the hug, I asked my husband how he felt and he said tired and exhausted.  So, I told him to stay laying down, where it is cool, and rest the rest of the day.  I then walked into my kitchen and preceded to make a drink that I have for the purpose of keeping hydrated when I am out and about.  It has electrolytes in it, not a lot of sugar either, and is flavored orange so it is really easy to drink it all down.  I can also get it in lemon-lime flavor too but I like my orange flavor.

My husband did not question me, I just handed him the drink and told him to drink it down.  A few hours later, I did the same thing again because with him being so dehydrated and passing out, I knew it was bad.  He needed to replace all those electrolytes that he lost by not drinking enough water on a hot 80-degree day and being outside the whole time.

Tips on dehydration:

  1. If you have a headache, first drink water, lots of it!  The first sign of dehydration in your body.
  2. If you have a lot of mucus in your body, drink lots of water during the day, up to 2 quarts per day will help a lot to thin the mucus and sometimes make it go away.
  3. Drinking a lot of water will be more restroom breaks, but give it 2 to 3 months of doing this and your body will be trained to absorb a lot more water and fewer restroom breaks.  Keep it up!  Health benefits are Greater than you know.
  4. Never drink a gallon of water within a 24-hour period because it will strip you of your electrolytes and shut your body down.  This would “flood your body”!  This is a fine line so 2 quarts is good and for those who have a lot of weight on, 3 quarts is okay but NEVER 4 quarts to a Gallon!  Never, Never, Never!
  5. Water replenishes your body and all organs: Your body is made up of 70% water, now let’s look at what that means, Bone needs 24% water, Skin needs 80% water, Blood needs 85% water, Brain needs 75% water, Lungs need 90% water and Muscle need 75% water.  If you don’t give them what they need, they will shrivel up and won’t work for you anymore or give you a lot of problems!  So, Drink Up!
  6. Did you know that blood carries all your vitamins and nutrients to every organ in your body and feeds them?  If your blood doesn’t have enough water, it won’t flow like it is supposed to!

Let’s talk about symptoms of dehydration:

  1. Dizziness – You haven’t drunk enough today, if it continues, go to a doctor.
  2. Dark Urine – You do need a light yellow to your urine though or you are lacking Vitamin B Complex if your urine is clear!  Take a Vitamin B Complex and see what I mean.  Vitamin B Complex creates yellow in urine.  (There are 8 parts to Vitamin B and they are all in sync, so you need all of them, all the time, Vitamin B Complex.)
  3. Thirst – If you get thirsty, you let yourself go too long without water.  Drink up with water only, no beer, alcohol, ice tea, soda, sports drinks, coffee, or anything else will work now, just WATER!
  4. Dry Mouth – You tell me that you didn’t realize your mouth would get dry without water.  What happens when you come out of surgery and you are in recovery with a dry mouth, what does the nurse hand you right away???  WATER!
  5. Fatigue – If your body doesn’t have enough water in it, of course, it’s going to get tired, drink water and take a vitamin regimen too.
  6. Headache – Don’t forget, first drink water for a headache, this is a simple answer to why you might have a headache!

If you have any of these symptoms, for more than a day, go see a doctor!  I want you to stay “Healthy”!

Have a Happy Healthy Day and Stay Hydrated!
